Yukie Okuyama-Moen first began to learn about costume design from the professionals who worked for her on her own choreography projects in Japan. Through that early experience she learned to appreciate costume designs that are easy to wear and have a simplicity and elegance that compliment the dance. Since coming to New York, she began teaching for Merce Cunningham while continuing her own dancing and choreography. She also decided to try her own hand at costume design and began taking courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Ms. Moen has designed the costumes for her dances in the United States and the work of other choreographers, including Jeff Moen, Bryan Hayes, Mary Seidman, Saeko Ichinohe, and most recently, Anita Cheng.
